When the choir has sung its last anthem, And the preacher has said his last prayer,
When the people have heard their last sermon, And the sound has died out on the air.
When the Bible lies closed on the pulpit, and the pews are all empty of men;
When each one stands facing his record, And the great book is opened,
What then?

When the actors have played their last drama, And the mimic has made his last fun;
When the movies have flashed the last picture, And the billboard displayed its last run
When the crowds seeking pleasure have vanished and have gone into darkness again,
And the world that rejected its Savior Is asked for a reason, What then?

When the bugle's last call sinks in silence, And the long marching columns stand still,
When the captain has giv'n his last order, And they've captured the last fort and hill,
When the flag has been hauled from the masthead, And the wounded afield have checked in,
When the trumpet of ages is sounded, And we stand up before Him, What then?

When your life, friend, has run to a finish, And the last you can do is then done,
When your work here on earth is all ended And eternity's issues begun;
As you think of how long God has pleaded, Of how Christ bore your sins on the tree,
And your soul stands there naked before Him, And the Father denies you, What then?

They borrowed a bed to lay His head when Christ the Lord came down.
They borrowed the ass in the mountain pass when He rode into town;
But the crown that He wore, and the cross that He bore were His own, The cross was His own.

He borrowed the bread with which He fed on the grassy mountain side.
He borrowed the dish of broken fish with which He satisfied;
But the crown that He wore and the cross that He bore were His own, The cross was His own.

He borrowed the ship in which to sit as He taught the multitude.
He borrowed a nest in which to rest; He had never a home so crude;
But the cross that He bore and the crown that He wore were His own. The cross was His own.

They borrowed a room for Him a tomb, the Passover meal to eat.
They borrowed a cave for Him a grave; they borrowed a winding sheet;
But the crown that He wore and the cross that He bore were His own. The cross was His own.

During his 1960 presidential campaign, John F. Kennedy often closed his speeches with the story of Colonel Davenport, the Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives: On May 19th, 1780, aka “New England’s Dark Day, the sky of Hartford darkened ominously, and some of the representatives, glancing out the windows, feared the end was at hand. Quelling a clamor for immediate adjournment, Davenport rose and said, "The Day of Judgment is either approaching or it is not. If it is not, there is no cause for adjournment. If it is, I choose to be found doing my duty. Therefore, I wish that candles be brought." Rather than fearing what is to come, we are to be faithful till Christ returns. Instead of fearing the dark, we're to be lights as we watch and wait.

Forgive Me When I Whine

Today upon a bus, I saw a lovely maid with golden hair; I envied her -- she seemed so gay, and how, I wished I were so fair; When suddenly she rose to leave, I saw her hobble down the aisle; she had one foot and wore a crutch, but as she passed, a smile. Oh God, forgive me when I whine, I have two feet -- the world is mine.
And when I stopped to buy some sweets, the lad who served me had such charm; he seemed to radiate good cheer, his manner was so kind and warm; I said, "It's nice to deal with you, such courtesy I seldom find"; he turned and said, "Oh, thank you sir." And then I saw that he was blind. Oh, God, forgive me when I whine, I have two eyes, the world is mine.
Then, when walking down the street, I saw a child with eyes of blue; he stood and watched the others play, it seemed he knew not what to do; I stopped a moment, then I said, "Why don't you join the others, dear?" He looked ahead without a word, and then I knew he could not hear. Oh God, forgive me when I whine, I have two ears, the world is mine.
With feet to take me where I'd go; with eyes to see the sunsets glow, with ears to hear what I would know. I am blessed indeed. The world is mine; oh, God, forgive me when I whine.

A few months after their final child left home for college, a man’s
wife was resting on the couch while her head was on his lap. He

without your glasses you look like the same beautiful young woman
I married years ago.” “Honey,” she replied with a smile, “without
my glasses you still look pretty good too.”
